The
momentous moment of China's accession to the
WTO on Saturday was witnessed by many
of the delegates a few meters from the Al
Dafna Hall. Inside, as the world's most populous
country became a member of the global trade
organization, crowds of delegates huddled
around large television sets, in the Sheraton
Hotel.
Cameramen
who could not make their way inside, climbed small
ladders and tried to catch a shot through the auditorium
door way. When that didn't work they resorted to filming
the delegates glued to television and collected footage
of the accession by filming it on the TV screen.
One
US delegate, who did not make it inside the auditorium,
said
he didn't mind so much. "It's
more symbolic," he said. "From the US
perspective, it's a historic moment. We've worked
on this for years and the WTO will be a better
organization with China in it."
