  • MOSCOW, Nov. 25 (UPI) Former world chess champion Garry Kasparov was sentenced to five days in prison for attending an anti-Kremlin rally in Moscow.

Kasparov, a critic of President Vladimir Putin, was one about 60 protesters arrested Saturday by riot police as several thousand people rallied in central Moscow, reported EuroNews.net.

At his sentencing, Kasparov told journalists the testimony against him was "all lies."

Kasparov is a leader of Other Russia, an opposition group accusing Putin of destroying personal liberties and the freedom of the press, EuroNews.net reported Sunday.

Putin has said he plans to step down next year as president at the end of his second term but will continue to play a role in Russia's politics.
