Armenia's
highest state scientific self-governing
organization has launched a new website
to promote democracy in the country.
The effort to establish Forum, the name
of the new website, is being supported
by the United Nations Development Programme
(UNDP).
The
website aims to help in public participation in governance,
broaden public awareness on democratic issues and create
new opportunities for interaction in Armenia. It will
host online discussions on human rights, environmental
protection, gender, human development and volunteering.
Forum will employ various tools, such as bulletin boards,
photo galleries and newsletters to encourage participation
from its citizens.
Forum is part of a three-year UNDP initiative
to help Armenia use information and communication
technology to support democracy. The plan is
worth $487,000. This initiative will also develop
Armenian language Internet tools, establish regional
Internet centers and develop an e-government
system to improve public administration.
"UNDP hopes that Forum will constitute
an essential building block for the formation
of an information society and strengthening of
democratic governance in Armenia," said
UNDP Representative of Armenia, Joel Boutroue.
Forum aims to fulfill its goals by allowing
individuals and organizations to join discussions
in established communities and create new ones.
It will also post results of the discussions
in newsletters and online documents.
The body that launched Forum, the National Academy
of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia (NASRA),
promotes and carries out fundamental and applied
research in different scientific fields and coordinates
research throughout the country. The Armenian
government consults the NASRA on scientific issues.
This body is financed by the state, yet receives
additional funds by private organizations within
the country and abroad.
The pilot phase of this website was held last
year during which the environmental protection
community was most active. They helped create
a youth center for environmental protection and
the materials posted by community members are
used for research purposes.
