United
Nations relief efforts in southern Afghanistan
are being hampered by armed Taliban and
bandits according to UN officials today.
Relief workers in Kandahar and in vast
areas north and west of the city are
facing insecure working conditions, Einar
Holtet, a spokesmen for the Office of
the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Afghanistan
said.
The
International Organization of Migration is also speeding
up distribution of winter tents to internally displaced
people (IDP) in Herat, Kunduz, and Mazar I-Sharif.
A delivery of 6,500 tents from Turkey will help provide
shelter to 250,000 at five IDP in Herat, in western
Afghanistan.
Additional vials of vaccines and syringes are
being distributed by Unicef from Pakistan to
various parts of Afghanistan, where there will
be a campaign to fight measles in the coming
weeks. The campaign is prepared to start in Kunduz
and Takhar Provinces while half a million doses
of vaccines and syringes were being placed in
Herat.
Previous vaccines have already reached more
than 257,000 children in Kabul aged six months
to 12 years according to Unicef, covering more
than 80 percent of children under five.
"The administration in Kabul is facing
a difficult task in the coming two months that
will be critical for humanitarian assistance,
especially in remote areas, particularly in Hazarajat
and areas as far west as Herat," Holtet
said.
