PORTO ALEGRE, Brazil--Delegates to the World Social Forum arriving at the Pontifical Catholic University (PUC) Sunday for the third day of their deliberations found spent bullet casings, blood, bullet holes and police investigating a crime scene that left one man dead.

According to police, a gang of well-armed men attempted to hold up an armored car as it arrived early Sunday morning to re supply the cash machines that many of the 12,000 delegates had been using to get Brazilian currency.

Military police guarding the building overnight noticed the attempted robbery and opened fire, according to a spokesman. At least one person was killed and another robber was wounded as he fled the area in a car, the spokesman said.

Detectives roped off the area near the PUC entrance, forcing delegates to walk around the back. The cash machines were shut down during the investigation.
