Can’t
seem to recall hearing of the Golden Gate Tunnel?
Not many locals or tourists know that just under
San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge is a new
tunnel. Built in only 18 days it is most unusual
and offers an unclear set of directions to the
tunnel’s entrances. Moreover, it doesn’t
tell you where you can expect to exit.
The
method of construction is a secret and like the Great
Pyramids, unlikely to ever be revealed. It does have
a “Donut Court” where you can choose from
19 different donut shops. And, while there you might
as well get a massage in the Tunnel Spa. All are conveniently
located 85 feet underwater.
The web site is not
absolutely useless,
but it is close. Its
purpose is to entertain
you enough to want
to buy from their huge
selection of merchandise.
Well, some day it may
be huge, right now
you can choose between
a T-Shirt, a baseball
cap, and the Official
Golden Gate Tunnel
Permit Sticker. It
might be wise to order
yours quickly. Who
knows how much toll
revenue will be collected
to keep this site going.
The
tunnel is open 23
hours a day, 6 days
a week. It’s
closed “… each
day from 3 to 4 am
to survey the damage
from the prior day,
make some repairs,
and eat a few tacos
from this great place
not far from the entrance.” It
is also “… proud
to be the only North
American underwater
roadway to allow most
hazardous loads, including
Level 3 Toxic Waste,
Code-14 Nuclear Waste
and Spent Fuels, and
Category 6&7 Sludge.
Please use caution
when transporting such
loads.”
“Entrances
to the Tunnel can
be found
at various places,
although they are not
particularly well marked.
Due to budgetary constraints,
some tunnel entrances
may be too small for
most vehicles. If you
encounter an entrance
that is too small for
your vehicle, we recommend
that you not proceed.”
What more can I say?
