BONN--The
logo of the online magazine "Wasser und Mensch" ("Water
and Man" - website: aqua.feg-bonn.de) manages
to remind one simultaneously of the famous Leonardo
da Vinci drawing of the human figure in a circle
and of a businessman rolling, arms akimbo, in a
wheel he does not quite feel confident he can control.
Which comes across as an apposite reminder of the
timelessness of humanity's concern with water and
of the ease with which water management in our
day seems to be spiraling out of our control, that
is unless we address it soon and seriously.
The
enterprising and multi-lingual group of youngsters
in charge of the online magazine, eight students
from the Friedrich-Ebert College in Bonn,
plan to attend the Freshwater Conference
and report on it in four languages - German,
English, French and Spanish. According to
the site, they propose to give young people
all over the world a chance to share in the
exchange of ideas and inform themselves on
the importance of water issues facing mankind.
As of Monday morning, the website features
reports from a preparatory seminar and a
link for downloading conference documents
and papers. News articles on conference events
and papers, interviews with delegates and
other related information will appear on
the site once the conference gets under way.
Interest groups and non-governmental organizations
wishing to 'spread the word' should not miss
the opportunity to talk directly to young
people: feedback by e-mail is invited.
The students seem
to have prepared themselves
well, reading up and
attending preparatory
seminars before the
conference. And what
better promise for
sustainable water management
in sync with the environment
than new generations
raised to be aware
of the issues and committed
to the future? Students
of the World, Unite!
You are tomorrow's
water stakeholders.
