As the world awaits the new year, Europe is counting down to a new single currency and a new presidency for the European Union (EU).

On January 1, 2002, the Euro will become legal tender in 12 member states of the EU. Starting this date 300 million European citizens wills begin to use this single currency.

"Beyond the technical challenge and unprecedented monetary upheaval, the introduction of the actual notes and coins constitutes a strong sing of European integration," said Belgian Finance Minister, Didier Reynders. He added, "After the lifting of boarders, Europeans will hold a tangible symbol of their common destiny."

Leading Europe to "their common destiny," in the year 2002 will be Spain, who will take over the Presidency of the EU from Belgium. This will be the third time Spain has held the Presidency, the previous occasions being 1989 and 1995.

The Spanish Foreign Minister, Josep Pique said that the EU will strive to combat terrorism, and Spain during its Presidency, will make this their top priority. The Spanish Presidency intends to reinforce the instruments of law throughout the EU and strengthen cooperation between law enforcement agencies of the member states. The Presidency also intends to work on a common list of terrorists and terrorist organization for the EU.

The Spanish Presidency also intends to introduce the Euro successfully to the EU. In order to do so they will have to reinforce the coordination of natural economic policies and the continued integration of financial markets.

To celebrate the emergence of the new single currency festivities have been organized in Brussels. The ceremony will be held in the Royal Palace in Brussels and will be attended by the King of Spain, Juan Carlos and the King of Belgium, Albert II.

There will also be a sound and light show in Brussels half an hour proceeding the new year that will welcome 2002 and the new currency.

In addition to the celebrations, the first Euro stamps will be issued for the denominations of 0.25 and .050 Euros. The stamps will be Spanish, commemorating Spain's Presidency of the EU.
