The 12th World Clean Air
and Environment Congress will be held August
26th -30th in Seoul, Korea. The theme, "Greening
the New Millennium" was chosen by the
Congress as an effort to recognize the world's
obligation to safeguard the environment. Because
the conference is only held every three years,
this will be the groups first meeting in the
21st century. The last World Congress was held
in Durban, South Africa in 1998. The event
is sponsored by the International Union of
Air Pollution Prevention and Environmental
Protection Associations, (IUAPPA).
In
a welcome message to conference participants,
Professor Won-Hoon Park, Ph.D who is chairman
of the IUAPPA 2001, emphasizes the growing concerns
for our environment since the last millennium's
technological advances have caused so much harm. "The
problems arising from over-exploitation of environmental
resources are no longer limited to localities,
but are beginning to surface in the global scale."
Klaus Topfer, Executive Director of the United
Nations Environment Programme will deliver the
keynote speech on the problems and prospects
of managing the global environment. Mikhail Gorbachev,
former President of the Soviet Union will also
speak on protection of the environment. Member
of IUAPPA will deliver papers on subjects including
indoor air quality, greenhouse and trace gases,
Asian dust and waste management. The conference
is hosted by the Korean Society for Atmospheric
Research.
The International Union of Air Pollution Prevention
and Environmental Protection Associations is
an international coordinating body promoting
progress in the prevention and control of air
pollution, the protection of the environment
and the adoption of sustainable development.
The IUAPPA was founded in 1964 and has been
instrumental in developing clean air policies
throughout the world. The group's current political
priorities are to address urban air pollution
and transboundary air pollution. In 2002, IUAPPA
will hold their own Rio +10 conference in Rio
de Janeiro to analyze the advances made in environmental
policy since the first Earth Summit held there
in 1992.
