HARRISBURG, Pa., June 28 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency today announced the award of more than $6 million to support 15 proven, research-based delinquency and violence prevention programs in 17 counties.
"This state funding is a continuation of PCCD's commitment to advancing the best juvenile prevention programs in communities across our state," said Walter M. Phillips, Jr., PCCD chairman. "Investing in our youth, through these proven programs, yields long-term results that preclude a life of crime and save our state millions in adult incarceration costs."
Each of the funded programs is a new initiative for the grantee's community and was selected to address the unique needs of each area. The programs will be implemented over a four-year period.
Model programs have been proven to be effective in reducing or eliminating the risk factors that lead to problem behaviors by promoting emotional competence among elementary school age children, enhancing parenting communications skills and teaching drug use and abuse resistance skills among targeted adolescents.
Since 2004, with the support of Governor Edward G. Rendell, PCCD has invested nearly $22 million to support model prevention programs addressing juvenile violence, delinquency, substance abuse and other problem behaviors.
The grant awards will be managed by PCCD's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, which is responsible for the development of policy recommendations and the administration of federal and state funds to support programs designed to improve Pennsylvania's juvenile justice system and to prevent violence, delinquency, substance abuse and related problem behaviors among children and youth.
As the state's criminal justice planning agency, PCCD works to prevent and reduce crime in Pennsylvania and respond to the needs of victims. PCCD collaborates with the Governor's Office, state and local elected officials, juvenile and criminal justice agencies, victim service agencies, community- based organizations, non-profits, schools and others to achieve these goals.
