ATLANTA, Nov. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- According to the annual Indicators of School Crime & Safety reports published by the National Center for Education Statistics, the number of K-12 schools using security cameras is growing on an annual basis. However, despite the increased use of video, many schools limit their use of video to post-event analysis, rather than utilizing it in a proactive manner to help improve campus safety.
In the latest 'Bird's Eye View' advisory from Wren, "Five Ways You Could Be Using Your Video," the company provides recommendations to help school administrators and security personnel more proactively use video to improve safety, reduce crime rates, and ultimately, achieve a higher return on investment from their surveillance technology.
"All too often, schools rely on vendors to tell them where they should install cameras - these are usually the most obvious locations, which may or may not be the key problem areas at a particular school," said Jeff Floreno, Director of Operations and Security Strategy. "By incorporating any of these five recommendations into their security processes, schools can identify inefficiencies and implement processes to improve operations and identify potential safety hazards that need to be addressed through policy changes or training."
For example, Wren advises schools to assess their priority locations for cameras based on internal evaluations from staff versus only relying on what a vendor suggests. While some vendors may stress the importance of monitoring the entries and exits, video can also be used strategically to deter student misconduct in the cafeteria; to improve the consistency of locking the school up every night; monitoring hidden areas where fights most often break out; helping to make the pick up and drop off procedures more efficient and safe; or even to challenge and better prepare students and staff for a real emergency by monitoring fire drills.
