Unwilling to be influenced by a down economy,
Westborn Market is striving to lift people's spirits and the local economy
with an 8,000 square foot expansion of its Dearborn store, due to be
completed before the end of this year.
"Even though we are going through challenging times, it's important to make
this investment in our store and in the Dearborn community," said Mark
Anusbigian, president of Westborn Market. He and his brothers Jeff and
Anthony now manage the independent gourmet grocer, whose original store on
Michigan Avenue in Dearborn was founded by their parents George and Janette
Anusbigian in 1963.
In 1988, in response to its strong customer base, the family expanded the
Dearborn store across the street to 21755 Michigan Avenue, providing a
12,000 square foot open air market to house the freshest of produce and
meats. In 2004, another 8,000 square feet were added and parking access
was increased.
The current expansion, which is underway at the northwest corner of
Westborn Fruit Market, will enable Westborn Flower Market, which had
remained in operation for the past 22 years on the original store's site,
to move across the street and to become housed under one roof with the
produce, bakery, meat and deli counter as well as other food and beverage
items.
"This will provide much greater convenience for our customers who are
seeking a 'one-stop shop'," said Anusbigian. "We'll have a full-service
florist with wedding design services, ready made and custom made floral
arrangements, bouquets, giftware, fresh cut flowers, gift baskets, delivery
service and more."
According to Anusbigian, the architecture for the expansion will be a sleek
design of glass and steel with a clean industrial feel. Customers will
still have the same easy access to parking from both Michigan Avenue and
Oakwood Boulevard.
"There's never been a better opportunity to demonstrate our confidence in
Dearborn and in Michigan than during these difficult times," added
Anusbigian. "We are decidedly optimistic."
Westborn Market has stores in Dearborn, Berkley and Livonia. Regular
business hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
on Saturday, and
