SMOKY LAKE, ALBERTA -- 08/13/08 -- Journey to the Metis Crossing Voyage Days Aug. 23 and 24, explore the historic village and put a little zip into your summer fun, while learning all about the Metis, one of Alberta's most vibrant cultures.

Take some time to stroll into the past and get a sense of Metis settlement life by visiting the Crossing's unique interpretive sites. Stop for tea and bannock at the historic village or learn about the housewife's task of carding and spinning wool to clothe her family at Homestead House, which displays an assortment of antique machinery that was vital to pioneer survival. An on-site museum offers a wealth of information about Metis history and culture, as well as a York boat, used by Metis fur traders to transport their wares.

The scenic stop is located in the County of Smoky Lake on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River and invites visitors to see one of the earliest Metis communities in Alberta, founded in approx. 1862. Whether sight-seers are out for a day trip, trail tour or camping in one of the on-site RV spaces, Metis Crossing offers an authentic cultural experience for everyone.

Start your mornings off with a hearty pancake breakfast served up by friendly staff. Then the fun kicks off on Saturday with official greetings and the musical stylings of the High Ryder Band.

New this year, visitors are invited to relax and enjoy an entertaining skit about the origins of the Metis people. The weekend schedule of fun also includes an open mike and special performances by jiggers to showcase this rollicking form of traditional Metis dance.

This year's new lineup also includes Red River Cart races, a crowd-pleaser that celebrates the importance of these sturdy two-wheeled vehicles to early Metis people.

The twist? Slide into the 21st century and keep the vacation buzz going by hooking onto a high-flying zipline, one of the Crossing's coolest new attractions. A total of six lines offer a sky tour of some of Alberta's most beautiful riverside scenery. Group discounts are available.

Round out the family fun with a petting zoo, concessions, crafters' tents and a children's game booth.

Metis Crossing is open daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. until Sept. 8 for the 2008 season. To learn more, log onto www.metiscrossing.com or call 780.656.2229.
