WALTHAM, Mass. - (Business Wire) V.i. Laboratories, Inc. (V.i. Labs), a provider of software protection solutions for securing high-value and mission-critical applications, will use Riverside Research Institute, Inc. (RRI) for regular, independent testing of CodeArmor®, support for customer red team analysis, and identification of new protection approaches based on its experience in analyzing new malware protection techniques.

Advances are being made on both sides of the malware battle. Anti-malware experts are developing innovative tools to reverse engineer protected malware, and malware writers are deploying new techniques to thwart these tools. To level the playing field for its customers, V.i. Labs will draw on RRIs extensive experience in anti-malware research to further enhance CodeArmors software protection capabilities.

Malware writers are adding increasingly sophisticated software protections to prevent security engineers from discovering their malicious intent, said a senior member of the research staff at RRI. By analyzing the state-of-the-art software protection in the latest malware, we can discover new techniques and strategies for protecting legitimate applications.

Research indicates that the techniques that keep malware from being detected are advancing. In a 2007 report by Kaspersky Labs, more than 12 percent of new malware in 2006 contained new active countermeasures against security solutions a 178 percent growth since 2002.

More and more malware is using advanced protection techniques to defeat security solutions and anti-malware analysis tools, said Victor DeMarines, vice president of Products at V.i. Labs. By leveraging RRIs expertise, we gain valuable insight into the evolving malware arms race and further grow our own database of countermeasures used to protect applications from reverse engineering.
