September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month
Congressional leaders from the states that suffer the highest prostate cancer death rates for black men convene September 25-26 to look at reasons why African Americans have a 60% higher incidence rate of prostate cancer than all other men, resulting in a 150% higher mortality rate.
WASHINGTON, Sept. 24 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Fourth Annual African American Prostate Cancer Disparity Summit, hosted by the Prostate Health Education Network (PHEN) and supported by Congressman Gregory W. Meeks aims to confront the current disparity leaving black men dying at more than twice (2.4 times) the rate of any other race from prostate cancer.
During this two-day Summit, prostate cancer survivors, advocates, community leaders, researchers, and policy-makers will come together to present and review information, analyze existing programs, and explore new initiatives to address the prostate cancer disparity. The discussions aim to raise awareness and to foster common understandings, as well as to form a strategic framework that will lead towards eliminating the racial disparity.
"September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. On Thursday, September 25, and Friday, September 26, I will join with Thomas A. Farrington, President of the Prostate Health Education Network (PHEN) for a Prostate Cancer Disparity Summit on Capitol Hill and at the Washington Convention Center. This two-day conference will convene prostate cancer survivors, advocates, clergy, researchers and policy-makers to discuss ways to eradicate prostate cancer disparity rates in the African American community. Conference attendees will participate in discussion topics that include; global cancer research legislation, vaccines, treatment options and research activities."
The Summit opens on Thursday, at the Rayburn House Office Building with a series of panel sessions and features a luncheon program with Keynote Speaker Tavis Smiley.
