LOS ANGELES - (Business Wire) Univision 34, KMEX-TV, the leading Spanish-language television station in the country, announced that it is expanding its popular 5 am to 7 am local Spanish-language morning news program an additional hour from 7 am to 8 am broadcasting on its sister station, TeleFutura 46 KFTR-TV starting Monday, April 28.

The ratings increases we have seen recently have demonstrated that Latinos in the Southland are hungry for more news and information. The expansion of our morning newscast is our continued commitment to inform, empower and motivate the Latino community, said Maelia Macin, Univision 34 vice president and general manager. Furthermore, this decision is a response to the overwhelming popularity of Primera Edicions community focused and unique approach to news as well as TeleFuturas growth and maturity as the #2 Spanish-language television station in our community.

The expansion of the morning newscast reflects its continued ratings success. During the most recent February sweeps, in NSI total market, the 5 am news grew +20% while the 6 am news increased +11% versus a year ago. In addition, Primera Edición ranked second to KTTV morning news for 6am and tied for #1 at 5 am. Since its launch, Primera Edicion has been the number #1 6 am news choice for Hispanics

Univision has one of the leading news operations at a national and local level, in many instances serving as an information lifeline for our viewers, said Terry Mackin, president of the Univision and TeleFutura Television Station Groups. We take this responsibility seriously and this expansion is part of our commitment to deliver top news programming, focused on the issues that are most important to our viewers.

Expanded Format

Airing Monday through Friday and hosted by award-winning anchors/reporters Rolando Nichols, Gabriela Teissier, Francisco Pinto and Claudia Botero, this expansion of Noticias Univision 34: Primera Edición will feature local news, weather and traffic, as well as viewer generated stories, interactive audience segments and guest performances. There also will be weekly entertainment, cooking, health and legal issue segments.

Univision is also expanding its local morning news to the 7 am hour on its local TeleFutura stations in Miami, New York and Sacramento.

Despierta América (Wake Up America) -- Univision Networks top rated morning talk and entertainment show which is celebrating 11 years on the air -- will continue to be broadcast nationally Monday to Friday from 7 am to 10 am.
