DRAPER, Utah - (Business Wire) Flexpoint Sensor Systems, Inc. (OTCBB: FLXT) today announced that its patented Bend Sensor® technology was recently featured and recommended in a study completed and published by the University of Rome Tor Vergata.

The study was submitted to the Journal of Neuroscience Methods in an article entitled “Improving Performance of Data Gloves Based on Bend Sensors.” In the article, a team of researchers led by Giovanni Saggio, Ph.D. concluded that an “array of Bend Sensors®” provide “an advantageous cost to reliability ratio” by “adopting bend sensors to measure each finger joint.” The study points out that “Data gloves can find applications in…many fields regarding social, medical, work, sport and entertainment aspects…”

In a social environment the data glove could be used “for sign language recognition; as an alternative to the actual PC input devices, or as a tool in domestic and remote assistance, and as an appliance to design ergonomic devices.”

The medical field reports that the data glove would have “advantages for patient motor therapy, rehabilitation and tele-rehabilitation post-surgical evaluation, tele-operations, estimation of functional assessment or disability. But also doctors can take advantage of their education by manipulating 3D virtual anatomic parts or be trained for virtual surgery.”

In addition, with the use of “data gloves, workers can become skilled by simulating the consequences of their actions in a virtual setting or in hazardous environments for safety purposes” (robotics), professionals in dangerous occupations, “such as soldiers, astronauts, firefighters, etc., could use the glove to monitor their actions, or the ergonomics of their environment, so they can be evaluated, programmers can be aided with automatic programming tools, people can be helped in remote apparatus control,…can assist in design and manufacturing, even before the actual construction of objects, by means of interactions with computer generated environments…”

The study further concludes, “The entertainment field can utilize the data glove for gaming and videogaming applications,…for multimedia, for art and music appliances, (playing a virtual instrument, sound compositing or sculpting) since a single hand gesture can be associated with an event or a musical note or a chord.”

Clark Mower, President of Flexpoint Sensor Systems, stated, “We are pleased that Professor Saggio and his colleagues in the Health Involved Technical Engineering Group (HITEG) at the University of Rome Tor Vergata have again validated the application of our technology in so many varied applications. We are currently providing Bend Sensors® to makers of “virtual reality gloves” for all types of applications from medical, physical therapy to gaming related uses. We are working towards furthering this research into new agreements with manufacturers to provide additional applications for our patented Bend Sensor® technology. This independent study not only validates our technology and raises awareness of our products, but is already solidifying relationships that should ultimately lead to additional revenue streams for the Company.” http://www.hiteg.uniroma2.it/
