BLUE BELL, Pa. - (Business Wire) Unisys Corporation (NYSE:UIS) today announced the addition of currency processing to its smart line of payments products and services. Unisys SmartCash Currency Processing complements Unisys SmartSource Series check image capture products, helping financial institutions improve quality, accuracy, productivity and customer service.

Employee productivity is a critical issue facing todays financial institutions, particularly as banks use new technology that allows tellers to complete different types of transactions that previously may have been handled by the back office. Currency processing automation dramatically improves the way banks and businesses handle transactions.

The Unisys SmartCash line takes advantage of this advanced technology. SmartCash products automatically and accurately count, verify authenticity, sort, store, and dispense currency throughout the daily transaction cycle.

Unisys customers now have another smart tool to streamline their payments operations, increase teller productivity, and strengthen customer service, said Alan Howard, president, Payment Systems, Unisys Corporation. And, by coupling SmartCash with Unisys SmartSource Series check image capture line, we leverage our strength in payments with a differentiated front office solution that also provides one easy point for service and sales issues for both currency and check processing.

The Unisys SmartCash line includes one currency dispenser and two currency recyclers, each with capabilities to suit a variety of banking environments.

SmartCash Currency Dispenser targets drive-up banking and retail business cash orders. It is the most compact device on the market but has the largest currency capacity in its class. One SmartCash Currency Dispenser can eliminate the need for multiple cash drawers, reducing cash exposure and enhancing security.

SmartCash Compact Currency Recycler can be used by tellers as an automated cash drawer either standalone or integrated into a teller application. It detects counterfeit, torn and folded notes for teller inspection, then stores cash in its vault. It is the most compact recycler on the market and fits beneath a teller desk. By quickly and accurately counting the currency, banks can significantly reduce transaction time, often also reducing the number of required tellers.

SmartCash Dual Delivery Currency Recycler is versatile with a compact size to fit tight teller space but also can help improve operating efficiencies in an open office or retail environment with sit-down or counter-height use. Dual dispense stations make it perfect for sharing between two tellers. In addition to confirming currency values, its LCD screen provides tellers with advanced system communication for additional operating efficiencies.

Unisys introduces the new SmartCash line through its collaboration with ArcaTech Systems of Mebane, N.C. Customers may purchase SmartCash products directly from Unisys or through various Unisys business partners.

SmartCash Currency Processing products are part of a family of Unisys solutions that provide customers with flexibility in transforming their payments operations and modernizing legacy systems. The new currency processing line complements the SmartSource series, an advanced line of image capture devices. Unisys also offers an SOA-based Open Payments Platform for managing payments across business lines, enterprise servers, and business process outsourcing services. The Open Payments Platform includes solutions for check and remittance processing, imaging and electronic payments.

For more than 50 years, Unisys has been an industry pioneer in check processing around the world. From web-enabled branch and merchant capture devices to high-speed sorters, Unisys devices are used by 41 of the worlds 50 largest banks. With approximately 2,200 payment systems customers worldwide, Unisys equipment captures or processes more than 50 percent of the world's checks and images.
