DATE: Tuesday 8 April 2008
VENUE: Trafalgar Square, London
TIME: 10.30am - 11.30am
A giant cigarette butt, which is 30ft high and 1.5 metres wide, has been dramatically dropped in Trafalgar Square by Keep Britain Tidy to highlight the sheer scale of the country's largest litter problem.
With cigarette related litter prevalent on 78% of streets surveyed, Keep Britain Tidy is launching its biggest smoking-related-litter campaign ever, in an attempt to tackle the issue first-hand.
The size of the cigarette butt reflects the staggering number of stubs dropped in the UK, which cake our kerbs and cost tax payers millions of pounds to clean up each year.
Since the launch of the smoking in public places ban on 1 July 2007, the level of cigarette litter has increased and shamefully, the UK is one of the worst countries worldwide for flicking its fag ends on the floor.
Throughout April, Keep Britain Tidy will be asking the question, 'Are you a dirty chucker?' as it targets the country's irresponsible smokers.
Reporters and press photographers are welcome to attend.
