MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM -- 11/08/09 -- The A57 from Sheffield to Glossop has been voted the top road in Britain for bikers, according to research by Swinton Bikes.

A survey of 2,000 customers found that the winding road that connects east to west is the most popular road for bikers to ride in Britain.

The poll found the top UK roads to be:

1. A57 Glossop - Sheffield (Mountain route)

2. A680 Wolsingham - Brampton (Mountain route)

3. A259 Hythe - Hastings (Coastal)

4. A361 Lechlade - Burford (Rural)

5. A4059 Becons Reservoir - Rhigos (Mountain route)

The top four characteristics identified as making a 'good' road for bikers were 'winding', national speed limit, having a good quality road surface and nice scenery.

Anthony Aronin, Head of Swinton Bikes, one of the UK's leading providers of motorbike insurance said: "Many bikers like a challenging route which will test their riding skills. These roads will often attract many bikers, particularly at weekends and bank holidays.

"We would urge any bikers who enjoy riding these popular roads to ride safely and don't take unnecessary risks. Also, if riding a road for the first time, never try and keep up with bikers in front, as they may have better knowledge and experience of the road and it's bends."
