NEW YORK, NY -- 07/06/09 --
UJA-Federation of New York officials announced
that $136 million has been raised for its 2009 Annual Campaign. A decrease
of 11.5 percent from the previous fiscal year, these are still very strong
results considering the economic climate. In total, UJA-Federation raised
$215.3 million, including $60.5 million in Planned Giving & Endowments, for
an overall increase of 1 percent.
"In any given year, for a local charity to raise this amount of money is
impressive," said John M. Shapiro, president of UJA-Federation. "To
generate these results in such a difficult economic climate requires the
efforts of a terrific and dedicated staff that is deeply committed to
helping those in need. Our donors recognize that at this time of economic
crisis many people are feeling enormous pain and need even greater
assistance. They have stepped up because they understand that their
response is critical."
"Donors trust the experience and professionalism UJA-Federation provides as
an organization, and they have confidence that the funds are allocated in
the most beneficial way, especially in these troubling economic times,"
explained Jerry W. Levin, chair of the board.
"At a time when increasing numbers focus their philanthropic resources on
institutions close at hand and specific causes that resonate with them, we
ask donors to provide significant resources to support individuals,
families, and communities that aren't necessarily part of their lives,"
said John S. Ruskay, executive vice president & CEO.
"Down campaigns are never easy, but by most accounts, down 11.5 percent is
still extraordinary in this changed economic world. Raising $136 million
reflects the faith and recognition of the unique role of UJA-Federation in
providing the infrastructure for caring, and Jewish education for the
Jewish people locally and globally," added Ruskay. "This year was
exceedingly challenging for every nonprofit. Closing at $136 million is a
huge accomplishment."
Ruskay saluted the dedication of the organization's leadership, including
overall campaign chairs, Howard P. Milstein and Linda Mirels; president and
chair of the board, John M. Shapiro and Jerry W. Levin; the campaign
professional team headed by senior vice presidents Paul Kane and Stuart
Tauber; and the volunteers, colleagues, and approximately 65,000 donors
whose generosity and commitment will help provide essential services in the
coming year.
