NEW YORK, NY -- 07/20/09 -- In 1968 John Storyk graduated from Princeton, moved to New York City and within a few months found himself designing and literally working as a carpenter on Cerebrum, a downtown NYC club. One night Jimi Hendrix dropped in. Impressed, he hired Storyk to create his personal recording studio. Forty years later Electric Lady (http://www.electricladystudios.com/) is still churning out hits, and Storyk has chalked up over 3000 studio designs for superstars like Alicia Keys and Led Zeppelin.

With offices in New York, Switzerland, Argentina and Brazil, and representatives in China, San Francisco and Miami, his wife/business partner Beth Walters, and their 50-member Walters-Storyk Design Group (http://www.wsdg.com/) team have created sophisticated production environments for clients like Green Day, R Kelley and Tim 'Timbaland Mosley. "Our niche is unique," John Storyk says. "In addition to aesthetics, our rooms need to be acoustically accurate, and, each studio must reflect the artists' personal tastes."

Buffalo-based Super group Goo Goo Dolls' Inner Machine, was an opportunity for Storyk to revisit Trackmasters, a studio he first designed in 1986. "Back then Johnny Rzeznik and Robby Takac were studio interns there," he says. "Twenty-years and 9 million + records later they bought it and called us for a total remake."

Storyk recently returned to his early NYC club design days, for Le Poisson Rouge (http://www.lepoissonrouge.com/). Forty years ago it was The Village Gate, presenting artists like Miles Davis and Billy Holiday. Last year two young musician /entrepreneurs retained us to turn it into a high-concept club/art gallery. "It's compatible with any musical style, from a string quartet to Norah Jones, Mos Def and Lou Reed. How cool would it be if LPR draws crowds for as long as Electric Lady has been recording artists like U2, Dylan and The Stones?" Storyk wonders.

Recent WSDG assignments include a studio for Bruce Springsteen and Storyk's first 2nd generation client. 30+ years after designing a studio for Bob Marley, he's creating one for Marley's son Damian.

No one has tabulated how many Gold records have been cut in Storyk-designed studios. But with Elton John, Common, Bowie, Beyonce, Jay-Z... virtually every icon of the past 40 years recording in Storyk rooms, sales probably number in the hundreds of millions. It boggles the mind.
