(PRWEB) November 27, 2009 -- On Thursday November 12, 2009 The National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters selected its officers. They are: Chair - Dr. Nelva Lee is the President and Founder of the Medical Interpreting and Translating Institute Online – MiTio (www.mitio.org ); Vice Chair - Dr. Rita Weil is a professional interpreter, interpreter trainer, and course developer for AHEC; Secretary - Elena Langdon is the supervisor of Interpreter & Translation Services at Baystate Medical Center; and Treasurer - Joel Dougherty is the Chief Operating Officer of the OneWorld Community Health Centers.

Dr. Lee states that “The National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters is a completely independent non-profit certifying body whose purpose is to monitor and oversee the certification process. The National Board members were selected through a public and independent process (without the founders' influence) and will be funded through grants as a 501c3.”

The Certification exams were developed by the National Board founders - Language Line University (LLU) developed the oral certification instrument and the IMIA (International Medical Interpreters Association) developed the written certification instrument with PSI, a national assessment and testing company. The certification exams will be administered by a third party - PSI - that will ensure that the exams are proctored and that the security of the instruments is kept to the highest standards. All National Board proceeds or testing fees will be payable to a non-profit entity, the National Board, and these funds will be utilized to administer registration, proctor the exams, and utilize any remaining funds to further develop other test versions. There will be other exams under the umbrella of the National Board credentials that will be developed by non-profits or for-profits alike, the National Board does not discriminate. LLU, IMIA and other organizations that develop future tests for the National Board will receive licensing fees to recoup the costs of test development.
