members of the E&C Physician Advisory Council. Arnold W. Cohen, M.D.,
Chairman of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Albert Einstein Medical Center; Dan
O'Keeffe, M.D., Maternal-Fetal Medicine Medical Director of Phoenix Perinatal
Associates; and Peter A. Schwarz, M.D. Dr. Cohen is the President of the
Obstetrical Society of Philadelphia. Dr. Cohen was previously a Professor at
Jefferson Medical College and University of Pennsylvania, and Corporate
Medical Director of Women's Health at US Healthcare and then Aetna. Dr.
O'Keeffe is a consultant and speaker on the business aspects of a
maternal-fetal medicine practice and teaches coding and business courses for
the Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine, which he also chairs. Dr. Schwartz
taught at the University of Massachusetts and Tufts University while also in
private practice. He was Director of the Department of Obstetrics and
Gynecology and the Residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Reading
Hospital and Medical Center in Reading Pennsylvania from 1987-2005.
Arthur Caplan, Ph.D., Chairman Department of Medical Ethics and Director
of the Center for Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania's Medical
School, will review ethical considerations in the delivery of obstetric care.
Dr. Caplan has authored numerous books and articles relating to medicine,
science, philosophy, bioethics and health policy. He is a fellow of the
Hastings Center, the NY Academy of Medicine, the College of Physicians of
Philadelphia and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Nature Biotechnology named Dr. Caplan one of the ten most influential people
in the ethics of biotechnology. He writes a column on bioethics for MSNBC.com
and is a frequent guest and commentator for media outlets.
Panelists for a session focused on the application of "Clinical Decision
Support in OB" include: Glenn Markenson, M.D, Chief of Baystate Maternal Fetal
Medicine and Director of Obstetrics at Baystate Medical Center, MA; Jerald
Korman, M.D., Chairman, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, St. John's
Episcopal Hospital, NY; and Larry L. Smith, JD, Vice President of Risk
Management for MedStar Health in Baltimore, MD. Dr. Markenson is also
Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Tufts University School of
Medicine. A retired Colonel in the US Air Force, Dr. Markenson served in
Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Dr. Korman is a Diplomate of the
American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a Fellow of the American
College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Mr. Smith is responsible for the
design, implementation and administration of MedStar's risk management,
self-insurance and commercial insurance program. He is currently Chairman of
the Board of the Captive Insurance Council of the District of Columbia and
Adjunct Faculty at Georgetown University.
Karl Kapp, Ph.D., Professor Bloomsburg University and author of the new
book Games, Gadgets & Gizmos for Learning: Tools for Transferring Knowledge
from the Boomers to the Gamers, will explain how to overcome staff resistance
to incorporating technology into hospital practices. As a knowledge broker,
Dr. Kapp understands how people learn and is an authority on Instructional
Design, which focuses on the systematic design, delivery and evaluation of
instruction in a corporate environment.
"The Age of Economic Medicine" will be presented by Lee Igel, Ph.D.,
Assistant Professor New York University, who holds degrees in clinical
exercise physiology, counseling and industrial/organizational psychology. He
worked for a professional baseball team in player development before returning
to health care. Dr. Igel is a frequent writer and speaker on human affairs
and has presented to groups including the American Psychological Association,
the American Political Science Association, the International Institute of
Forecasters, the Pennsylvania Hospital History of Women's Health Conference,
and the Sixth Quality Colloquium at Harvard University.
Nikki Nesbitt, J.D., a partner with Goodell, DeVries, Leech & Dann, LLP,
specializes in medical malpractice defense and complex commercial litigation.
She is actively involved in the Maryland Defense Counsel and the Defense
Research Institute. Ms. Nesbitt has expertise in the legal implications of
medical documentation including proper charting and trends in discovery of
electronic medical records in malpractice cases. She will appraise the legal
