Fujitsu Encoder Coupled with Sencore Decoder Enables Delivery of High-Quality, Low-Latency HD Feeds Using Half the Bandwidth Required for MPEG-2 Transmissions SUNNYVALE, Calif., Aug. 11
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Fujitsu Computer Products of
America, Inc., a leading supplier of innovative computer products and
broadcast solutions, today announced that CBS News is using the Fujitsu IP-
9500e MPEG-4 AVC encoder as part of the HD rollout of the Evening News with
Katie Couric. CBS News is using the IP-9500e at its Washington, D.C. bureau to
deliver multiple HD feeds to its new HD Control Room 47 at the CBS Broadcast
Center in New York. The combination of the Fujitsu IP-9500e and Sencore
MRD3187A Decoder creates the lowest latency of any available MPEG-4 AVC codec.
The 300-millisecond encoder/decoder latency enables CBS News to conduct live
interviews with exceptional HD picture quality while using less than half the
network bandwidth required for traditional MPEG-2 transmissions.
This deployment continues the CBS News rollout of HD for contribution
feeds. The network used the IP-9500e to broadcast the 2008 Presidential State
of the Union Address in HD, marking the first time CBS used HD MPEG-4 AVC
compression for a network contribution feed. CBS News also plans to use
Fujitsu encoders for coverage of the Republican and Democratic Presidential
Nominating Conventions as well as for the Presidential Inauguration. In
addition, the network plans to implement the Fujitsu HD encoder at its London
studio later this summer to facilitate HD feeds from that location.
"With increasing consumer demand for popular television news programs to
be broadcasted in HD, Fujitsu is honored to continue to work with CBS News to
help deliver the highest quality HD programming possible for their audiences,"
said Vic Herring, senior director, new products group, Fujitsu Computer
Products of America, Inc.
