A new website providing support and information to victims and survivors of lung cancer has been launched at TheFaceofLungCancer.org. The site provides a community for victims and survivors while distilling important information and advocating change in health care policy.

(PRWEB) November 9, 2009 -- With health care as the number one issue in the public square, and in recognition of November’s designation as Lung Cancer Awareness Month, a new website offering support and information for lung cancer victims and survivors has launched. TheFaceofLungCancer.org is a unique site whose sole purpose is to provide information and online support for victims and survivors of lung cancer and the people close to them.

The new lung cancer information website will have topical content updated monthly reflecting areas of interest important to lung cancer victims and survivors, including news on advances in treatment and clinical trials, pending legislative initiatives and answers to questions submitted by visitors. The site will make digestible the overwhelming amount of lung cancer information available on the World Wide Web, providing valuable links while empowering a community whose goal is to make lung cancer research and treatment a national healthcare priority.

“Lung cancer continues to kill more people each year than prostate, breast, and colon cancer combined, yet there is no PSA, no mammogram or colonoscopy, to screen for lung cancer,” says Face of Lung Cancer founder Deb Loesel, who lost her husband Dan to the disease in 2006, “Because of this, five year survival rates for lung cancer victims remain below 16%, nearly the same as in 1971. Leading researchers and physicians acknowledge that the social stigma attached to lung cancer continues to impede the funding necessary to affect change.”

The organization does not solicit donations or profit in any way from its constituents, existing solely to serve the community of victims and survivors of lung cancer. Support comes from the community the website seeks to build, and from providing the necessary information for taking action.

“The Lung Cancer Mortality Reduction Act (HR 2112/S 332) would establish a comprehensive, inter-agency response to significantly reduce lung cancer deaths by 2015,” says Loesel. “This is the kind of comprehensive response initiated to tackle breast cancer 30 years ago. Nearly 200,000 people are dying every year while we wait for our elected officials to move this bill out of committee and enact it in 2010 as promised.”

Loesel adds, “My organization’s message is that it is time to advocate for ourselves and push for their response.”
