The Democratic Party of Vietnam, in a Meeting with Assistant Secretary of State Michael Posner, Expresses Its Views on Human Rights Abuses in Vietnam

WASHINGTON - (Business Wire) In a meeting today with Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Michael Posner, the Democratic Party of Vietnam (DPV) discussed Vietnam’s increasing abuse of human rights. Mr. Posner asked for comments prior to the U.S. – Vietnam Human Rights Dialogue he will have in early November. At the meeting, the following recommendations from Dr. Ngai Nguyen, Vice Secretary of the DPV, were given to and discussed with Mr. Posner: - Release immediately and unconditionally all current political prisoners and political activists, including the leaders of the DPV, Le Cong Dinh, Secretary of the Party, and the DPV’s Youth leader, Dr. Nguyen Tien Trung, and
- Respect and comply with their commitments to the internationally-accepted standards of human rights and democracy, and
- Be returned to the list of Countries of Particular Concern (CPC), and
- After consultation with the international community, Vietnam be removed from the World Trade Organization (WTO) and its presidency of the United Nations Security Council, if improvements are not made.
