Search Gainers:
The new Batman film "The Dark Knight" soared to the top of the Lycos 50 "Movers & Shakers" list with an 800 percent increase in searches this week. The movie broke box-office records, raking in $158.4 million during its opening weekend, with the performance of the late actor Heath Ledger (as The Joker) being hailed by critics as worthy of an Oscar nod, and the numbers suggest that movie could be the summer's highest-grossing film. Venerable culture magazine The New Yorker gained 480 percent after publishing a controversial cover featuring Sen. Barack Obama standing in the Oval Office dressed in Muslim attire with an American Flag burning in the fireplace and Michelle Obama dressed in army apparel. This cover caused controversy as politicians, columnists and TV personalities quarreled about its appropriateness; New York Governor, David Paterson and the NAACP have condemned the magazine's cover. Perennial Lycos 50 member Pamela Anderson (No. 8 on this week's list) caused a stir at a KFC in Australia this week, despite the fast food chain sponsoring her trip down under. Anderson, visiting Australia for a guest appearance on the Big Brother reality show, visited the parent company of KFC, Yum Brands Incorporated, to hand deliver a letter protesting cruelty to the chickens; KFC denied the accusations. Finally, the E! reality series "The Girls Next Door" placed No. 4 on the Lycos 50 list this week following rumors of a feud brewing between Hugh Hefner's playmate girlfriends Kendra Wilkinson, Holly Madison and Bridget Marquardt. Wilkinson, who reported from the red carpet for E! at last week's ESPY Awards (No. 10 on this week's "Movers & Shakers" list, with a 210 percent rise in searches), didn't deny the reported rift, said to stem from jealousy surrounding Wilkinson's budding celebrity at the expense of Hef's other girlfriends.
