PHILADELPHIA & VALLEY FORGE, Pa. - (Business Wire) Ed Satell, Founder and CEO of Progressive Business Publications (PBP), a recognized leader in corporate citizenship, was honored as Man of the Year for his quiet but extraordinary commitment to regional nonprofits. Ed sponsors 29 major projects with 20 nonprofits, focusing on disadvantaged children, higher education, community and civic engagement, medical research, and his heritage. Dr. John Templeton, Chair of the Templeton Foundation, was cited for his support of the Boy Scouts and the proud traditions of Scouting. More than 300 guests attended the gala dinner and presentation at the Union League of Philadelphia.
The Council enjoyed a record-setting evening at this Man of the Year & Distinguished Citizen Event, held on Thursday evening, June 12, 2008. Man of the Year Honoree Ed Satell, initiated a “Challenge Grant” during his acceptance speech, vowing to support the vital work of the Scouts by matching each three dollars raised with an additional dollar, up to the $2 million goal! His speech, which received a prolonged standing ovation, traced the history of the great good Scouting Programs accomplish, particularly among inner city youth. Mr. Satell used patriotic analogies to frame the current Scout situation and to explain his “act of conscience” in supporting the Cradle of Liberty and inner city children.
Chief Scout Executive William Dwyer said: “Many Leaders of the nonprofits here tonight—like us—know Ed’s quiet but very generous support. His long-time dedication to give back should be an example to the city and to all.”
Samuel Savitz, Chairman of the Savitz Organization, introduced Dr. Templeton and praised him for both his professional and philanthropic achievements. Dr. Templeton has been a long supporter of the Scouting movement, referencing in his speech the importance of boys and girls leaving the city streets for a week-long stay at the local Boy Scout Camps such as Treasure Island, Camp Garrison and Resica Falls.
The Event Chairs, Hugh Long, PA President of Wachovia Bank, John Smith III, Partner of Reed Smith, Robert Byers, Chair of Byers Choice LTd, Samuel Savitz, and Tom Schubert, CFO of PBP, were delighted with the success of the 2008 program.
