New styles add warmth and function to outdoor exercise

Dodgeville, Wis. (PRWEB) -- Staying active at a time when the crisp fall air begins to nip at skin can be a challenge. But the payoff is worth it. According to MayoClinic.com, outdoor exercise can be the cure for cabin fever and the winter blues. Studies show that even moderate exercisers bolster their immune system and get 20 to 30 percent fewer colds than non-exercisers. The trick is staying warm and safe when the temperature starts to plunge.

“We know people who enjoy outdoor workouts don’t like to stop when the weather turns cool,” says Scott Whittingham, senior outerwear merchant for Lands’ End. “For years Lands’ End fleece has been keeping people warm during their outdoor workouts, and this year we’ve added new styles with great colors to help outdoor exercisers even more.”

Stretch for muscles, and for fleece Designed specifically for cold-weather workouts is the new ThermaCheck®-100 Half-zip Stretch Pullover. Along with a touch of spandex for comfort during movement, this pullover for both men and women has an MP3 player pocket so music can be a part of a workout. Made with antistatic and antipilling fabric, the ThermaCheck®-100 Half-zip Stretch Pullover keeps its good looks for years to come.

Layering for Warmth and Comfort One of the biggest mistakes active people often make in the late fall and early winter is actually over-dressing for weather conditions. In fact, MayoClinic.com indicates that as people perspire during outdoor activities the wetness can actually cause a chill. To remedy the situation, Whittingham suggests dressing in layers that can be removed as activity increases.

The first layer, or base layer, functions to keep skin dry with layering piece such as Silk Interlock and Thermaskins™. The second layer acts to insulate. At the top of Whittingham’s list is ThermaCheck-200. It is twice as warm and four times as wind resistant as ordinary fleece.

For the coldest days, the new ThermaCheck-300 Full-zip Jacket for women, men and kids is the heaviest and warmest fleece Lands’ End has to offer with temperature ratings as low as 5º F. It features a nylon shoulder yoke and DriOff™ finish to resist water. Pit zips provide venting for excess heat during strenuous activity. A zippered chest pocket has a protective nylon flap and inside cord port so it’s perfect for MP3 players or cell phones. Kids’ jackets have nylon shoulder patches that shed water and fight abrasion. The outer layer should be designed to deal with the elements. Consider a lightweight shell that stops wind, rain and snow, but is also breathable.

Fleece from the Top According to MayoClinic.com, 30 to 40 percent of body heat is lost through the head. So, be sure to get – and wear – a hat. ThermaCheck-100 accessories offer a full spectrum of accessories: hats, gloves, scarves, ear wraps, neck gaiters and balaclavas. Some are perfect when layered under other pieces such as mittens and snow sports helmets.
