HOUSTON, TX -- 08/26/08 -- George Herbert Walker Bush was running for President, Kathryn Whitmire was Mayor of Houston and Houston was digging out from the worst economic times in the city's history. The 1980s: an interesting time when Lou Congelio and Stan Mays joined forces to launch a new business venture and shortly later won their first International Broadcasting Awards in Hollywood, CA.

STANANDLOU Marketing // Advertising is celebrating its 20th anniversary this month as one of Houston's leading agencies. Starting with a staff of four, the agency enjoyed billings of $200,000 in 1989 and has since grown to 12 employees and $14M in billings in 2008.

"We were determined to survive, and we managed to do just that and to win some industry awards along the way," said Congelio, President of STANANDLOU Marketing // Advertising. "It's been a great ride and we are looking forward to the next 20 years!"

"Lou's long history in the Houston advertising market makes him a great partner, he has a great understanding of advertising and in particular the Houston ad world," said Michelle Reed, Principal of STANANDLOU Marketing // Advertising.

How does Congelio assess the local advertising industry today? "Houston is made up largely of locally owned independent agencies -- like STANANDLOU Marketing // Advertising. While the major advertising agencies in the industry are headquartered in New York and Los Angeles, Houston can be proud of the product put out by the local agencies," said Congelio.

How does Congelio assess the changes in the industry over those 20 years? "Technology has revolutionized advertising in many ways by increasing the media opportunities in which clients can be seen and heard. The old standard media of broadcast and print now compete with the many opportunities afforded by the Internet. Technology has changed the way we create our work product and made us more efficient and creative at the same time. The bottom line now is that a business has to be creative, proactive and aggressive if it wants to be able to compete for people's attention," said Congelio.
