OAKLAND, Calif. - (Business Wire) SpringSource, a division of VMware, Inc.(NYSE:VMW) and the leader in Java application infrastructure and management, today announced continued and increased support for The Apache Software Foundation (ASF) and offered congratulations to the pioneering foundation that for the past ten years has fostered ground-breaking open source technologies like the Apache HTTP Web Server and Apache Tomcat Application Server.

SpringSource is the leading provider of support and services for Apache technologies, namely Apache Tomcat, the Apache HTTP Web Server and Apache ActiveMQ. Two weeks ago at SpringOne, the SpringSource annual developer conference, the company introduced SpringSource tc Server Developer Edition, a 100-percent Apache Tomcat-compatible platform that gives developers deep visibility into the performance of their Spring applications.

Since its inception, SpringSource has remained deeply committed to The ASF and ApacheCon. In fact, now as a division of VMware, SpringSource is more committed than ever. Currently, SpringSource employees are responsible for 95 percent of the bug fixes to Apache Tomcat in the past two years and many Tomcat problem incidents are often identified and resolved by SpringSource before they reach the community forums, resulting in a 97 percent renewal rate for Tomcat support.

SpringSource is among the first sponsors of the ASF. At this week’s ApacheCon US conference being held November 2-6 in Oakland, Calif., SpringSource reaffirms its continued support as a silver sponsor of the conference. SpringSource will also be co-hosting a reception on Wednesday, November 4 at the Marriott Oakland to celebrate the 10th anniversary of The ASF. In addition, SpringSource is sponsoring the Apache Tomcat track at the conference, designed to provide information about all the latest features in Tomcat and to help maximize its usage.

“We’ve been working with The ASF and providing support for Apache technologies for ten years now,” said Mark Brewer, vice president of operations, SpringSource, a division of VMware. “On behalf of all the developers and executives at SpringSource and VMware, we are thrilled to extend The ASF our hearty congratulations on its tenth anniversary and for providing many of the industry’s most influential open source technologies.”

Several key SpringSource executives and employees are participating in keynotes and panel discussions at this year’s conference, including Jim Jagielski, chief open source officer for SpringSource and director and chairman of The ASF and Filip Hanik, senior software engineer for SpringSource, ASF member and a key participant in SpringSource's Apache Tomcat initiatives. Additional SpringSource participants include ASF members William Rowe, vice president, Apache HTTP Server, Mark Thomas, Apache Tomcat committer, and Bruce Snyder, committer to the Apache ActiveMQ project. “We are grateful to SpringSource for their ongoing support of The ASF over the past decade -– from championing numerous projects, to Foundation sponsorship to conference promotion and community development,” said ASF President Justin Erenkrantz. “The generosity of sponsors like SpringSource allow us to continue to serve the community through 'The Apache Way'.”
