SEATTLE, WA -- 06/10/08 --
More than 700 pajama-wearing women, men and
children descended on three Pacific Northwest bowling alleys during what
appeared to be an otherwise normal Sunday afternoon in an effort to help
local foster children by participating in Sleep Country USA's largest
Pajama Bowl event to date. For the third year in a row, Sleep Country USA,
the Northwest's largest seller of premium mattress sets, invited its
community to join its effort to provide monetary support to local foster
organizations, and the result was a resounding success.
The tri-city events, held May 18th in the Portland area, and June 1st in
the Seattle area, attracted over 170 teams of bowlers. Each team had to
pledge a minimum of $250 in cash donations to participate, with many teams
raising well above this amount. In total, teams from Washington's two
Pajama Bowl events raised over $52,000, and teams from Oregon raised over
$28,000 for a combined total of more than $80,000 in cash -- over 20%
increase over last year's event, which goes directly to regional foster
children charities.
The six top scoring teams from each state qualified for prizes, including
the grand prize of brand new Simmons® Beautyrest® mattress sets, also
known as the "Bowling Ball" mattress, for each team member. The remaining
teams that placed were awarded gift certificates for local restaurants and
bowling parties, as well as Tempur-Pedic pillows for each team member.
Showing further generosity and community support, the top scoring team in
Washington, The Emerald No-Flips, donated their prize of brand new mattress
sets to Olive Crest, one of Sleep Country's foster care organization
partners.
"We are thrilled to be able to play a significant role in bringing together
this generous community for such a fun event," said Terry Horsley, Vice
President of Brand Strategy, Sleep Country USA. "The tremendous response
from individuals and businesses enabled us to raise tens of thousands of
dollars in cash to our foster care organization partners and heartily
support their efforts to ensure foster children have fulfilling childhoods
and a successful transition into adulthood. We are overwhelmed by the
caring and kindness demonstrated at these events, reinforcing our belief
that while not everyone can be a foster parent, anyone can help a foster
child(TM)."
