MADISON, Wis., Nov. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Sharendipity (www.sharendipity.com), the web based application development platform, today announced that they were the winners of the first global Ning Appathon competition. The Sharendipity application won the $4,000 prize for best ported application.

Submissions for the weeklong competition were judged by Wired Editor-in-chief and DIY Drones Network Creator Chris Anderson, Ning Chairman and Co-founder Marc Andreessen, and blogger and Managing Director of building43 Robert Scoble.

The Sharendipity application provides Ning Network Creators with the ability to deploy custom software that is unique to their respective communities. This could be anything from an educational resource used in Ning Networks for teachers, to a puzzle for a gaming Ning Network. The Sharendipity application takes advantage of Ning's OpenSocial interfaces to enable an entire community of members to extend application kits and templates and share their creations with others in the Ning Network. Members of Ning Networks using the Sharendipity Ning App can contribute their own user-generated applications without the need to program.

"We can imagine all kinds of new and useful applications being created by users with very specific needs within Ning," said Mark Gehring, co-founder and CEO of Sharendipity. "The Ning Network Creators and their members are accustomed to being in control of their tools and we're giving them a chance to extend that model into personalized, interactive software for their networks."

"We've seen massive, wide-scale adoption of applications across the Web, on the Ning Platform, and mobile devices," said Diego Doval, chief product officer at Ning. "People are coming to expect and require the flexibility to make technology their own and adapt it to fit their unique needs. This usage pattern will drive the future of application development, one that will largely be dictated by the consumer." The Sharendipity Ning App provides access to applications built within the larger Sharendipity platform as well as tools to deploy and aggregate application templates through the OpenSocial standard. Outside of the Ning Platform, Sharendipity provides web based, collaborative development tools where individuals can create interactive web applications regardless of technical expertise. Through the Sharendipity Ning App, Ning Network Creators can now deploy their projects easily within their respective Ning Networks.
