ASDE-X Enhances Safety Today and Provides Infrastructure for Future Precision Runway Monitoring Capability EAST SYRACUSE, N.Y., Aug. 14
EAST SYRACUSE, N.Y., Aug. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Sensis Corporation's Airport
Surface Detection Equipment, Model X (ASDE-X) is now operational at Detroit
Metropolitan Wayne County Airport. Detroit Metro is the 13th airport to be
commissioned through the FAA's ASDE-X program that will deploy systems to a
total of 35 airports nationwide.
ASDE-X fuses ground surveillance data from a number of sources to provide
air traffic controllers with real-time, highly accurate position and location
information of all aircraft and vehicles on the airport surface. By combining
surface movement radar, transponder multilateration and Automatic Dependent
Surveillance -- Broadcast (ADS-B), ASDE-X provides seamless, redundant
coverage in all weather conditions. The system also features an advanced
conflict detection and alerting technology, Safety Logic, which uses complex
algorithms to discern and alert controllers of potential aircraft or vehicle
incursions on the runway.
In addition to ASDE-X, Sensis is deploying its Multistatic Dependent
Surveillance (MDS) multilateration at Detroit Metro for Precision Runway
Monitoring -- Alternative (PRM-A). MDS will provide surveillance for
simultaneous parallel approaches to runways 4L/22R, 4R/22L and 3R/21L. The
FAA contracted with Sensis to provide MDS for PRM-A at Detroit Metro based on
a successful trial at Lambert - St. Louis International Airport and a
subsequent cost/benefit analysis. Sensis PRM-A will be the only certified
multilateration system that allows simultaneous approaches to closely spaced
parallel runways. The PRM-A system is scheduled to be operational in the
first quarter of 2009.
"ASDE-X gives controllers at Detroit Metro the most advanced runway
incursion detection and alerting today to increase safety on the ground," said
Tony Lo Brutto, Vice President and General Manager of Sensis Air Traffic
Systems. "Additionally, one of the key technologies employed by ASDE-X,
Sensis multilateration, will enable the airport to receive a modern precision
runway monitoring system. The built-in flexibility of ASDE-X means Detroit
Metro will be benefiting from PRM-A's ability to increase airport capacity in
a very cost-effective manner."
ASDE-X is operational at the following 13 airports: General Mitchell
International Airport (Milwaukee, WI); Theodore Francis Green Airport
(Providence, RI); Orlando International Airport (Orlando, FL); William P.
Hobby Airport (Houston, TX); Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport
(Atlanta, GA); Lambert - St. Louis International Airport (St. Louis, MO);
Bradley International Airport (Windsor Locks, CT); Seattle Tacoma
International Airport (Seattle, WA); Louisville International Airport
(Louisville, KY); Charlotte Douglas International Airport (Charlotte, NC);
Chicago O'Hare International Airport (Chicago, IL); Washington Dulles
International Airport (Washington, DC) and Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County
Airport (Detroit, MI).
