GORDONSVILLE, Va., July 28 /PRNewswire/ -- New findings from a
comprehensive analysis of more than 160 clinical studies have revealed the
importance of routine exercise and a balanced diet on brain health that can be
passed down through future generations. According to a recent press release*,
Fernando Gomez-Pinilla, a UCLA professor of neurosurgery and physiological
science, identified key nutrients that are beneficial in warding off mental
disorders, including omega-3 (particularly DHA), folic acid, vitamin B6, and
vitamin B12.
"Dietary deficiency of omega-3 fatty acids in humans has been associated
with increased risk of several mental disorders, including attention-deficit
disorder, dyslexia, dementia, depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia,"
said Gomez-Pinilla. "Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for normal brain
function."
Barbara S. Levine, R.D., Ph.D., director of the first NIH-funded Nutrition
Information Center at Weill Cornell Medical College, believes the analysis
provides a roadmap to supporting brain health.
"These scientists also covered the beneficial effects of folic acid and
other B vitamins, especially when it comes to preventing cognitive decline and
dementia among the elderly," said Dr. Levine. "This comprehensive analysis
points to the importance of dietary nutrients, which oftentimes are not
plentiful in the food we eat."
Dr. Levine is a scientific advisory board member of
www.dhaandbvitamins.org, an educational Web site developed by specialists at
Weill Cornell Medical College and other major academic medical centers. She
has been recommending the prescription-only product Animi-3(R) to patients who
have diseases associated with deficiencies in DHA, folic acid, and B vitamins.
"Physicians are using Animi-3 to deliver the highly refined omega-3, DHA,
folic acid, and vitamins B6 and B12 to different types of patients," said PBM
Pharmaceuticals President Jack Schramm, who developed the Animi-3 formula. "Of
particular interest here is the effect addressing deficiencies in DHA may have
on brain health as well as the brains of future generations."
Each capsule of Animi-3 contains 500 mg of omega-3, (350 mg of DHA), 1 mg
of folic acid, 12.5 mg of B6, and 12 mcg of B12. For more information, visit
