Carol Butler, vice president and general manager of Saalfeld, said the
company is helping local, regional and national distributors enter new markets
and expand sales, manage inventory, obtain immediate access to high-demand
products and obtain "green" products, services and specialized education.
Butler and a team of more than 20 Saalfeld professionals are discussing
these topics and much more at ISSA/Interclean, Las Vegas Convention Center,
Sept. 8-11, Booth 3689. They're discussing specifically how Saalfeld can help
distributors grow their businesses while keeping tight control on working
capital.
"We are helping distributors sell more -- and sell more effectively -- to
their existing customers," Butler explained. "In many cases, we are also
helping distributors reach new customers and enter new markets."
She said Saalfeld is also helping distributors improve cash flow by
reducing the costs of inventory management. "We're saying to distributors:
'Let Saalfeld be your warehouse. We can help you with asset management and we
can help you increase your turn and earn'."
Saalfeld is a fast-growing U.S. wholesaler with nine distribution centers
totaling 2.7 million square feet coast to coast. Saalfeld's main product
lines include more than 6,000 SKUs of foodservice disposables,
janitorial/sanitary maintenance supplies, industrial packaging supplies and
office products.
Manufacturers represented include Rubbermaid, JohnsonDiversey Consumer,
Kimberly-Clark, SCA Tissue, Procter & Gamble, GOJO, Solo Cup, Dixie
Foodservice Solutions, Georgia-Pacific, Heritage Bag, Pactiv, Reckitt
Benckiser, 3M, Dart Container and many others.
Saalfeld works with these suppliers to provide distributors with the
broadest selection of products -- in the quantities that each customer needs,
delivered when the customer needs them. Unique items can also be sourced
through Saalfeld.
Saalfeld sales professionals are the go-to resource on 'green' issues,
selling effectiveness, marketing and profitability
Founded in 1919, Saalfeld has long been respected for its committed and
informative sales and customer service representatives. Its consultative
selling approach ensures distributors get core business needs met.
"For distributors, Saalfeld's key differentiator is the quality of the
people in the field," said John Siegel, director of marketing for Saalfeld
Redistribution. "Our sales people are consultative business builders,
proactively helping distributors grow their business. They ask the customer
what is important to them and then help them figure out what will make them
win in their market."
The representatives are knowledgeable, experienced, well trained and,
perhaps most importantly, available with a phone call or email, Siegel said.
They have detailed product and market knowledge and can advise and assist with
product issues, training, marketing, environmental and other key topics
important to distributors and their customers.
As the trend to be environmentally responsible with purchasing decisions
evolves, understanding the green market is especially important.
"For jan/san distributors, there is a need to understand what green
cleaning means and the steps required for green certifications," explained
Siegel. "Our sales professionals can provide reference materials about green
standards and recommend appropriate products to meet those standards."
He said Saalfeld stocks the green products that are in highest demand.
These products are in the company's "Green Portfolio."
In addition, to help Saalfeld customers better understand
janitorial/sanitary redistribution, Saalfeld recommends an informative new
book authored by Dave DeWalt for the Sanitary Supply Wholesaling Association
entitled "Understanding Jan-San Redistribution." Copies of SSWA's free
Executive Summary Brief of this book may be obtained at the Saalfeld booth and
from Saalfeld representatives.
Distributors and their customers rapidly adopt Saalfeld's new Spring
Grove(TM) towel and tissue line
Recently, Saalfeld introduced Spring Grove, a value-based high-performance
line of towels and tissues. Spring Grove offers 14 SKUs including, folded and
roll towels, bath and facial tissues and associated dispensers. Products are
available in both natural and white. Sourced domestically, many of the
products meet or exceed EPA guidelines for recycled and post-consumer content
in commercial/industrial sanitary tissue products. Saalfeld said it will be
expanding Spring Grove to new product categories in the near future.
As part of Saalfeld's efforts to bring new, effective and environmentally
preferable products to distributors, the company added a new line from sorbent
manufacturer Evolution Sorbent Products called ColdForm(TM). This new
technology moves away from the oil-based polypropylene sorbents to better
performing, environmentally preferable and less expensive ColdForm sorbents.
The sorbents are new to the marketplace and are available through Saalfeld.
Saalfeld customers increasingly managing their purchases online
The Saalfeld website, saalfeldredistribution.com was upgraded last year
and has enjoyed rapid growth. It offers real-time inventory and order
placement, allows customers to see custom pricing and has a customizable "My
Items" page that enables users to create a list of core items that are
regularly purchased.
The Saalfeld online catalog is specific to each of its nine U.S.
locations, providing immediate access to local inventory of products. Users
of the online catalog can see local inventory, product specifications, data
attributes and their pricing. Saalfeld also offers email invoicing and real-
time access to purchase and invoice histories.
"Customers appreciate the site's real-time inventory and order placement
capabilities," said Deanna Taylor, national eBusiness manager for Saalfeld.
"Users can check inventory and see custom pricing -- and then place orders and
manage the orders."
Continued expansion across the Western U.S.
Saalfeld this year greatly expanded its ability to service the West
through its 120,000-square-foot distribution center in Hanford, CA, south of
Fresno. Together with Saalfeld's 300,000-square-foot Portland, OR center, the
company can now effectively serve all Western markets, from the Pacific
Northwest to California, Nevada and Arizona.
"Saalfeld has substantially invested in inventory, sales and customer
service to support distributors throughout the West," said Brian Owens,
general manager of the West region for Saalfeld. "And we've been well
received in big markets like Northern and Southern California, Las Vegas and
Phoenix with our highly personalized, 'roll-up-the-sleeves' approach to
helping distributors grow their businesses and carefully manage costs."
Saalfeld expands services for regional and national distributors
In addition to working with local-market distributors, Saalfeld also
serves regional and national companies that distribute food service and
jan/san products, as well as companies that sell via catalogs.
"Through continued growth and expansion we are able to meet the needs of
regional and national companies that sell the products we provide," said
Jennifer Easton, director of sales for national accounts at Saalfeld. "We're
really helping these companies manage the investment in their products. We
can supply them with truckload or less-than-truckload (LTL) amounts to
replenish their inventories as needed."
