SAN DIEGO - (Business Wire) Quality Claims Management Corporation,
www.qualityclaims.com, dedicated to helping homeowners successfully negotiate with insurance companies following a disaster, today posted a free
how-to guide and home inventory forms for those who want to prepare before a disaster hits.
The best time to do your annual home inventory is right after the holidays to make sure all of your new possessions and gifts are included and covered. Take out the new camcorder, grab the kids and do it as a family activity. It is important to prepare a home inventory list BEFORE you have any loss. Include a description of the item, with its age, replacement cost, where purchased, and if the item was a gift, indicate when you obtained it.
“If your house burns down or gets flooded or something else bad happens, you want to make sure you get everything you are entitled to from your insurance company,” said Ron Reitz, President of Quality Claims Management. “Insurance companies can be difficult to deal with - sometimes they don't want to give you all the money you are entitled to. By having everything documented, it makes it a lot easier for you and your family to get your lives put back together.”
In addition to filling out the free home inventory form, homeowners are encouraged to videotape the home interior or to use photos to document their possessions. Go room by room. Start with a wide shot of the room that shows all the furniture, decorations and artwork, and then shoot close-ups of each piece. If you are shooting video, you can provide an audio description as well.
Make sure you know what you are going to say before you start. You might want to prepare by putting 3x5 cards with the information printed out next to each item. Be sure to open drawers and doors of closets. Store the video or pictures at an offsite location like your office or save to an electronic back-up system.
