POWER WATCH DECLARED TODAY FOR NORTHEAST MASSACHUSETTS AND BOSTON
ISO NEW ENGLAND INC., THE OPERATOR OF THE REGION’S BULK POWER SYSTEM, HAS ISSUED A POWER WATCH FOR NORTHEAST MASSACHUSETTS AND BOSTON BEGINNING TODAY, MAY 8, 2008, AT 2:00 P.M. A COMBINATION OF UNPLANNED TRANSMISSION AND POWER PLANT OUTAGES IN THE AREA HAVE CREATED THE NEED FOR CONSUMERS TO CONSERVE ELECTRICITY. THE POWER WATCH IS EXPECTED TO REMAIN IN EFFECT THROUGHOUT THE DAY.
CONSUMERS IN THESE AREAS ARE ENCOURAGED TO REDUCE THEIR ELECTRICITY USE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AND THROUGHOUT THE DAY BOTH AT HOME AND AT WORK. CONSUMERS CAN HELP BY SHUTTING OFF UNNECESSARY LIGHTS AND ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES AND DOING ACTIVITIES SUCH AS LAUNDRY IN THE LATE EVENING OR EARLY MORNING HOURS. BUSINESSES CAN HELP BY TURNING OFF ALL UNNECESSARY LIGHTS AND OFFICE EQUIPMENT, SUCH AS COMPUTERS, WHEN NOT IN USE.
YOUR COOPERATION IS APPRECIATED.

power warning
A more urgent appeal for conservation, issued when electricity supplies are—or are expected to be—extremely tight and there is concern that electric companies may have to disconnect certain customers as a means of reducing demand on the bulk power system.
conservation tips
- Raise air conditioning thermostats a few degrees, consistent with health and safety.
- Turn off unnecessary lights, appliances, computers, and other office equipment.
- Defer laundry and dish washing until late evening or early morning hours.
