PITTSBURGH, Feb. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Panopto, Inc. announced today that its CourseCast lecture capture software -- free to qualified academic institutions -- now supports Microsoft Silverlight.
"Support for Silverlight expands the capabilities of CourseCast and that means more value and more options for our academic customers," said Brad Winney, Chief Executive Officer of Panopto. "We look forward to working with Microsoft to expand the use of Silverlight in the academic, civic and corporate markets."
Silverlight is a cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in for delivering the next generation of media experiences and rich interactive applications for the Web. For Panopto, using Silverlight and Microsoft Windows Media as core video technologies provides a broad range of benefits to users, including:

-- Consistent, high-quality media experiences across Windows Internet Explorer, FireFox, and Safari, on both Mac and PC -- High-definition video for images of chalkboards, whiteboards, and overhead projectors -- Resolution and screen-size independence -- Best-in-class video interactivity -- Industry-standard VC-1 video support
Eric Burns, Panopto's Chief Technology Officer and Co-Founder, said, "Silverlight provides a platform that supports not only the quality and interactivity needed in a cutting-edge media application, but also a powerful platform on which to build rich and engaging interfaces. Designers and developers can collaborate to create extraordinary multimedia playback systems that would be impossible or impractical with conventional web technologies."
"Microsoft has a long tradition of working in education and we are delighted that our Silverlight technology-through our relationship with Panopto-will be used to benefit thousands of students at the rapidly growing number of academic institutions participating in the Socrates Project," said Brian Goldfarb, group product manager in the developer division at Microsoft Corp.
CourseCast, developed and first implemented at Carnegie Mellon University, enables educators to capture, edit, index, archive and stream video and audio over the Internet. CourseCast gives students on-demand access to indexed lectures and course material, enabling them to experience or revisit entire lectures, or to focus on segments of their choice. CourseCast is easily deployed using standard PCs and peripherals, which substantially drives down the cost of lecture-capture deployment.
Announced in December 2007, the Socrates Project makes CourseCast freely available to universities, colleges and K-12 schools. In exchange for free access to the CourseCast platform, Socrates Project members participate in beta programs aimed at continually enhancing the technology. More than 150 institutions, from state university systems to small private schools, have now initiated the enrollment process in the Socrates Project.
