BETHEL, Conn. and NEW YORK, Nov. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Opening an ultra-low-budget indie film theatrically isn't easy, but this is just what first-time feature director Jill Wisoff did with CREATING KARMA. This quirky comedy reminiscent of the New York City angst-ridden and Borscht Belt-influenced works of Mel Brooks and Woody Allen will have its East Coast theatrical debut in limited engagement at the Bethel Cinemas in Connecticut, Nov. 13-19.
CREATING KARMA came about when Wisoff and pal Carol Lee Sirugo karmically met while working as "homeless" extras in Brooklyn on a Richard Benjamin film set and decided on the spot to write and co-star in an original screenplay. Thus is (Creating) Karma born at the time of the Woodstock festival; grown up, Karma is an uptight fashion editor who turns poet after moving in with her wacky new-age therapist sister. Reviewed following its October US theatrical open in Los Angeles as "filled with loads of goofiness and charm" by L.A. Splash Magazine, also cited is newcomer Rahad Coulter-Stevenson's breakthrough role as the dubious romantic co-star Vincent in a "lovely, balanced, eccentric performance." The film includes catchy theme songs you'll be humming for days after you leave the theater.
Filmed digitally to keep costs down, Wisoff signed on top-billed dancing diva Karen Lynn Gorney of Saturday Night Fever fame, who does a refreshingly comic turn as Karma's shopaholic British mother Chanel; esteemed actor Joe Grifasi as Karma's sleazy boss; composer Joel Diamond, who scored Sundance winner The Believer; Wisoff's own celebrity working with Todd Solondz as co-star in Fear Anxiety & Depression and songs/score for Welcome to the Dollhouse; and a cast of 100-plus veterans of film, Broadway, off-off, comedy and rock clubs to round out the cast. Keep an eye out for outstandingly groovy performances by David Schecter as the rabbi (veteran of Liz Swados's Broadway works including Runaways), newcomers Jeremy Ebenstein as Vincent's poetry-obsessed sidekick Kevin, and NYU drama school grads Jennifer Lee Mitchell and Riana Hershenfeld as Karma's shallow friends. Creative and far-out casting also brings you famous keys man and songwriter "Moogy" Klingman as Karma's father, She Wolf of Cycle Sluts from Hell and the She Wolves as Nancy the Waitress, and Joseph "Scheebo" Pampillonia, drummer of the original punk band the Stilletos as Horse.
Advance tickets (limited seating) and info can be found on http://www.bethelcinema.com or by phone at 203-778-3100. A Q&A with director and available cast and crew will follow the 7:15 pm Fri., Nov. 13 screening. Look for special screenings in NYC prior to the DVD release planned for Christmas if cosmic forces are aligned properly.
