SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - (Business Wire) Open Mobile Media Ltd. today announced that its second annual Open Mobile Summit, which took place in San Francisco on Nov. 4-5, was a runaway success.

The Open Mobile Summit brought industry luminaries from the wireless and the Internet worlds together to explore how to build and monetize the open mobile Internet.

Keynote speakers included John Donovan, CTO AT&T Michael Abbott, SVP, Palm; Cole Brodman, CTO, T-Mobile; David Perlmutter, EVP, Intel; Kevin Lynch, CTO, Adobe; Vint Cerf, Chief Internet Evangelist, Google; Jan Uddenfeldt, SVP, Ericsson; Walt Mossberg, Wall Street Journal; and Rich Wong, Partner, Accel Partners.

“We were extremely pleased with the tremendous attendance and industry participation at the event,” said Executive Producer Robin Batt. “It’s just a year since we launched the Open Mobile Summit series, and already the conference has become one of the most important events in the industry.”

“The quality of speakers was superb. This is one of the best conferences of the year to meet and interact with the movers and shakers of the mobile industry,” said Eric Klein, vice president Java Marketing, Sun Microsystems.

Some of the highlights and news from the conference included:

  • T-Mobile CTO Cole Brodman’s announcement that T-Mobile USA is to integrate Android application purchases into its billing platform
  • Amazon Kindle Director Russell Baker confirmed that the company would no longer be selling the Sprint Nextel-powered Kindle and would focus its efforts on it’s GSM-based Kindle eReader that uses the AT&T network and is able to roam internationally
  • Google project manager Michael Siliski gave a live demo of Google Maps Navigation using the newly-released Droid device
  • Funambol announced its acquisition of Zapatec – a leader of AJAX Web 2.0 frameworks;
  • Vint Cerf advocated spectrum sharing, as well as discussing the challenges of building an interplanetary extension of the Internet
  • Palm showcased “Ares,” their new browser-based, Web development environment by building an app and deploying it to a phone, live on stage
  • A very lively panel featured Walt Mossberg of the WSJ; Vint Cerf, Google; John Donovan, AT&T Michael Abbot, Palm; and Kevin Lynch, Adobe discussing and debating privacy issues and open-ness.

The C-level attendees filled the conference to capacity (and into overflow seating), and many congratulated the organizers on the high quality of the discussions.

“The quality of the content at the Open Mobile Summit was unusually high compared even to other high-profile conferences. Walt Mossberg’s facilitation, in particular, cut through the corporate veneer to get to the real issues,” said

Dave Hagan, CEO, Boingo Wireless.

The event was supported by over 15 sponsors including Motricity (Platinum), Access, Intel, Ericsson, Oracle, SVOX, Google, LiMo Foundation, SAP, Funambol, SAP, OPENWAVE, Qualcomm, Sun Microsystems, and FunMail.

The next Open Mobile Summit will be held in London on May 20-22, 2010 and the conference will return to San Francisco on Nov. 2-4, 2010.

Open Mobile Media said they expect the conference to grow in 2010, but their objective will remain: to provide an alternative to the major mobile trade shows and a place for intimate discussion among the most senior executives in converging wireless, Internet and media ecosystems to explore the future of mobile.
