Playing a significant role in bringing new technology to life, the 2009 Tekne Award recipients represent companies that have positively impacted the quality of life in Minnesota and throughout the world. Nonin Medical, the inventor of fingertip pulse oximetry, was recognized for its wireless fingertip pulse oximeter with Bluetooth® technology, the Onyx® II, Model 9560. Signifying a major step in telemedicine and chronic disease management, the Onyx® II, Model 9560 enables clinicians to remotely and accurately monitor patients with chronic diseases such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) or Asthma. This device is the world's first interoperable fingertip pulse oximeter, using the Bluetooth Health Device Profile (HDP) and has obtained Continua(TM) certification for interoperability.
