SALT LAKE CITY, April 26 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Arch Coal, Inc. today announced that Canyon Fuel Company's Sufco and Skyline mines each earned Utah Earth Day awards for outstanding efforts in environmental stewardship.
The Utah Division of Oil, Gas and Mining Board presented Sufco and Skyline officials with the awards on April 25.
Sufco mine was honored with an Earth Day award for its exceptional efforts to improve grazing and wildlife habitat in the Manti La-Sal and Fishlake National Forests in Central Utah. For seven years, in response to drought conditions, Sufco has voluntarily hauled water to more than 2,000 cattle grazing in these national forests. Additionally, Sufco repaired several ponds and increased the ponds' water storage capacity on U.S. Forest lands to provide an ongoing benefit to the native wildlife and livestock.
Skyline mine also was honored with Utah's Earth Day award for its outstanding efforts to manage vegetation and improve wildlife habitat on Manti La-Sal National Forest. Each year since 2004, Skyline has worked with the local Boy Scout troops to remove roughly 2.5 tons of noxious weeds, called musk thistle, from James Canyon located near Scofield, Utah. To date, the weed infestation has been eliminated from nearly 160 acres, and natural vegetation is thriving.
"We are constantly striving to be good neighbors in the communities we call home," said Arch Western Bituminous Group's President Gene DiClaudio. "Through these environmental achievements, the employees of Sufco and Skyline mines have demonstrated what it means to be good corporate citizens and community partners."
Sufco mine is located near Salina, Utah, and has approximately 360 employees. Skyline mine is located near Scofield, Utah, and has approximately 190 employees.
St. Louis-based Arch Coal is one of the nation's largest and most efficient coal producers. The company's core business is providing U.S. power generators with clean-burning, low-sulfur coal for electric generation. Through its national network of mines, Arch supplies the fuel for approximately 6 percent of the electricity generated in the United States.
