NEW YORK, Jan. 15 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American Kennel Club(R) announced today the "Top 10" most popular AKC(R) registered dogs in Honolulu for 2006.*
The AKC also announced today that the tiny Yorkshire Terrier is making news nationwide. The "Yorkie" has overtaken the beloved Golden Retriever to become the second most popular purebred dog in America according to AKC registration figures. The Labrador Retriever is the most popular purebred dog in the country once again -- a spot it has held since 1991.

** Tied with # 6 *** Tied with # 6 Local Statistical Snapshot -- While Labrador Retrievers maintained top dog status in Honolulu and the nation in 2006, Pomeranians gave them a run for his money with a dramatic jump into the number two slot from 9th place last year. -- Joining the Pomeranian in the top 3 locally is the 18th nationally ranked Maltese. -- Despite the Dachshund's position in 6th place on the national list, the small breed took a tumble from number 3 to number 13 in just one year, leaving room for the debut of the Shetland Sheepdog, tied for number 7 with the Poodle and the German Shepherd Dog. -- Some of the rarest breeds registered in Honolulu, interestingly enough include two breeds that are treasured in Japan, the Akita and the Japanese Chin.
