AMSTERDAM, September 27 /PRNewswire/ --
- New Citation Features Provide Additional Insights Into Influence ofResearch
Scopus(R), the world's largest abstract and citation database of researchinformation and quality Web sources, today announced the launch of two newfeatures. PatentCites, released to customers on September 22nd, allows usersto track how primary research is practically applied in patents. WebCites, which is to be launched shortly, is the first step towards enabling Scopususers to track the influence of peer reviewed research on web literature.
Researchers want to know the influence of research described in apublished journal article. Influence can be evaluated by how often an articlehas been cited in other research articles; however, research influence oftenextends beyond the official scholarly literature. For example, how thearticle has been used in patents, theses or other "grey literature" oftenavailable on the web.
Scopus PatentCites clearly identifies citations from patent sources thatcite Scopus articles on the Abstract and References page. Just like articlecitation counts, PatentCites links directly to the source items. This uniquefeature enables users to immediately see the relationship of primary researchto its practical application in patents and will be of particular value tothose working in disciplines such medicine, engineering, chemistry, agriculture or other applied sciences.
Among the key growing number of patent sources covered and updated dailyare the US Patent Office, European Patent Office and the World IntellectualProperty Organization.
In the forthcoming release of WebCites, users will be able to viewcitations to articles in Scopus from a growing number of carefully selectedscientific web sources such as Institutional Repositories and Thesis andDissertation databases as well as other carefully selected web sources. Userswill be able to gain additional insights into the influence of specificarticles and place article citation numbers from outside the peer-reviewedrealm into perspective.
Like PatentCites, WebCites will be presented clearly in a separatedisplay allowing the user to link directly to the relevant source itemsthrough just one click.
"Scopus users already enjoy full integration of the scientific Web in thesearch results. We have further applied the fundamental strengths of Scopus -namely the selection of quality and relevant sources, and powerful citationtracking -" says Scopus Director, Jaco Zijlstra "to disclose the influence ofpeer reviewed research literature on online grey literature and patents."
