Ms. Navratilova has amassed an unmatched number of professional records over the course of a career that spanned an amazing four decades. In September, 2006, six weeks shy of her 50th birthday, she won the mixed doubles title at the US Open, her 59th Grand Slam title. Ms. Navratilova has equally proved to be an accomplished humanitarian and public figure with her involvement in numerous charitable organizations around the world.
"We are thrilled to welcome to the AARP family someone who has shown the world the importance of staying fit as you age," said Emilio Pardo, Chief Brand Officer, AARP. "The 50+ age group is one of the most health-conscious segments of our population and we know our 39 million members will benefit from Martina's tips and expertise in the health arena."
Ms. Navratilova will engage with AARP members through various activities and initiatives throughout 2008, primarily via AARP's Fitness Website, http://www.aarpfitness.com/ which provides the tools and information to make it easier to live a healthy life at age 50+. Beginning in January 2008, AARP members will be able to access tips, exercise routines, Q&As and video messages specifically geared to addressing health concerns and questions of the 50+ and boomer demographic and Ms. Navratilova will also be participating in various AARP events throughout the year.
"I think we have a tendency to look for quick fixes and easy solutions to leading healthy, active lifestyles and my goal is to let my generation know that though staying fit takes work, it's just as important now -- if not more -- than ever before," said Martina Navratilova. "As I approached the milestone of turning 50, people asked me hundreds of times, 'How do you stay in such good shape and what's your secret?' I'm looking forward to sharing my 'secrets' with AARP's members and sharing the lessons I have learned to help them to achieve their own personal goals."
