PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- There's still time for local, college-bound high school seniors to take advantage of the Beneficial Scholars Program.
The essay contest awards $45,000 in scholarships to six college-bound high school seniors. This year, one Grand Prize scholarship of $20,000 and five scholarships of $5,000 each will be awarded to six winning students. High school seniors in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties in Pennsylvania, and Burlington, Camden, and Gloucester counties in New Jersey are eligible to apply. Applicants must have plans to attend an accredited higher education institution next fall.
"For more than 150 years, Beneficial Bank has been committed to being a force for good in the communities we serve," said Gerry Cuddy, president and CEO of Beneficial Bank. "It's important for us to continue our Scholars Program for a fifth year and assist more students in achieving their academic and life goals."
Participating students are asked to submit an essay about the most important issue facing their community and how they would respond to this concern. Entries must be submitted by December 14, 2007. A distinguished judging panel of area business and community leaders and educators will select the six winners.
Beneficial Bank first launched the Scholars Program in 2003 in honor of its 150th birthday. The program has generated overwhelming response, with participation from more than 200 area schools and 600 students in last year's essay contest alone.
Essays will be judged on content, clarity and creativity. Winners will be announced in February 2008. To obtain an official entry form, visit a Beneficial office or http://www.thebeneficial.com/.
