As part of its next-generation disaster
recovery and business continuity promise to its customers, Florida's
Northwest Regional Data Center (NWRDC) has moved its 130TB of data from
more than 70,000 physical tapes to the Nexsan SATABeast solution, Nexsan
Technologies announced today.
This regional data center, based in Tallahassee, FL, is a self-funding
auxiliary of Florida State University. It implemented the SATABeast
solution through LH Computer Services of Coral Springs, FL. SATABeast
provided a robust storage and backup solution for about 1/10th of the cost
of comparable solutions, while offering 30% greater capacity. The Nexsan
SATABeast solution also used 90% less floor space than the legacy automatic
tape library (ATL) solution.

Additional highlights of the implementation include:
-- Storage of 130TB of data on SATABeast
-- Replication of more than 2TB of data each day to an offsite location
via the dark fiber Florida Lambda Rail (FLR) network.
-- This data was previously stored on more than 70,000 tapes. The loss or
damage of a single 900GB tape could affect as many as 10-15 customers
-- The entire system is housed in two racks condensed down from the 800
square feet required by the legacy equipment. NWRDC benefitted from 30%
greater capacity in 90% less floor space.
-- NWRDC serves approximately 80 customers. It was created by several
research universities in FL and serves the education community as well as
local and state government organizations.
