NEW YORK, Oct. 15 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Los Angeles philanthropist and investor, Elliott Broidy, has been named recipient of The Raoul Wallenberg Award. The award is given periodically by The Raoul Wallenberg Committee of the United States. The Committee was founded in 1981 to perpetuate the humanitarian ideals and the nonviolent courage of Raoul Wallenberg, considered by many to be one of the great humanitarians of the 20th Century. At the request of a United States government agency, the War Refugee Board, the 31 year old Swede voluntarily went to war-torn Hungary; Wallenberg's orders were to save as many Jews as possible. Pitted directly against SS Colonel Adolph Eichmann, Raoul Wallenberg is credited with having saved the lives of at least 100,000 men, women and children -- but he could not save himself. On January 17, 1945 he was arrested by Soviet troops and his fate remains a mystery.

The Raoul Wallenberg Award, first presented in 1985, has been bestowed on a select number of individuals whose courage, selflessness and success against great odds personified those of Raoul Wallenberg himself. Previous recipients include H. Ross Perot "for his personal courage in the dramatic rescue of his American employees being held in Iran;" Miep Gies, "the Dutch heroine who provided a hideout and protection for Anne Frank and her family;" Elizabeth Dole "for her humanitarian work as President of the American Red Cross;" Harvey M. Meyerhoff "for his unceasing work to make the United States Holocaust Museum a reality;" and Alan C. Greenberg, "for the very special 'Magic' he has performed for The Wallenberg Committee and for so many others."
According to Raoul Wallenberg Committee Chairwoman, Rachel Oestreicher Bernheim, Raoul Wallenberg said during his life-saving mission to Hungary, "...I have come to save a nation. I must save the young ones first."
Elliott Broidy has strived to help strengthen nations: the beloved country of his birth, the United States of America; and his spiritual home, the State of Israel. In 2002, when the Second Intifada threatened Israel's security as well as its economic stability, Mr. Broidy formed Markstone Capital Partners with the intent of providing a superior return to its investors while strengthening Israel's economic viability. With $800 million under management, Markstone is Israel's largest private equity fund. To date, the Fund has invested nearly half a billion dollars in Israeli companies -- creating hundreds of new jobs and helping to build a strong economy for Israel.
Mr. Broidy's commitment to civic duty and philanthropy are recognized far beyond Los Angeles, where he resides with his wife, Robin and their three children. He serves as a member of the United States Homeland Security Advisory Council; the Board of Trustees of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.; The Los Angeles Police Foundation; and the Board of Governors of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. For the last five years he has served as a Commissioner of the Los Angeles Fire and Police Pension Fund. He also serves on a variety of boards and committees of his alma mater, The University of Southern California.
The Raoul Wallenberg Award is scheduled to be given at a Gala Awards Ceremony at The Waldorf Astoria on February 27th, 2008. The dinner will be co-hosted by The Raoul Wallenberg Committee and The Gateways Organization. In less than 10 years Gateways has established a foothold in America as being one of the premier, non-profit, Jewish educational organizations whose programs spread the spirit and values which embody much of what Raoul Wallenberg has come to symbolize.
